Richard III in Mandarin

English King, Pacific Profile

I wish this piece had more detail. Why it was done at all? (While it is being presented by the National Theater of China, it is being performed in New York. Is it a tour?) It would have been nice to have a review done by someone fluent in both languages so a true comparison could be made. While I agree that the true genius of the plays is in the language, plenty of very successful adaptations have been made using just the stories; what makes this one any worse than West Side Story?  The writer seems so disdainful of the production that he does not even bother with more than the most superficial criticism.  I think it is interesting that it was done at all; I just wish I could learn more about it.

Googling finds that it was at the Globe 2 years ago.  A more detailed review can be found here.
